Discord is a communication app for gamers that lets you easily voice chat, share photos and videos, and join channels with your friends. It is a chat app with a following of millions of users. The app also allows for rich media attachments, meaning you can easily send photos and videos. Discord also allows for voice and video chatting, making it perfect for gaming communities or keeping in touch with friends and family. Discord messages are sent instantaneously and can be read by anyone in the chat.
Discord also has a rich user interface that’s easy to use. You can easily locate messages if you want to. If you're anything like me, you're constantly sending and receiving messages on Discord. And while it's great to have all of those messages in one place, sometimes you just need to clean things up. Whether you're trying to declutter your server or you're just trying to get rid of some old messages, here's how to delete messages in Discord.
How can I delete Discord messages which I sent?
Here are the few steps to delete messages that you sent on Discord.
Step 1. Open Discord app
Open your Discord application on either your desktop application or in web browser.
Step 2. Select your Server
You have to select the server that you want your message to be deleted. You cannot globally search for the message that you want. For this example, I will be using GoLinuxCloud Test Server.
Step 3. Locate your message
You can either scroll up and backread your messages to look for the message that you want to delete. The easy way is to use the search bar located on the upper right side of Discord.
For this example, I have sent the message "This is a test for search" prior to this step.
Step 4. Search for a keyword
You can either search for a keyword of the message that you sent or something that is in the message itself. I will be using the word "search" since I remember that word is included in my message. Click on "Jump" if you already chose the message you want to delete.
Step 4.1 Search Options
You can also use these search functions for specific type of message that you want to look for.
Here are its uses:
From:
Use the From filter to narrow down your search results to a specific user. (Good place to start!)
Has:
The Has filter lets you search through messages based on media contained within the message. Using Link or Embed filters will point you towards messages containing those items, whereas Video, Sound, and Image filters can sort through messages with any embedded media (from any source!) to give you those specifics. You can also combine filters for added search power.
In:
Using the In filter will allow you to select which channels within your currently open server you want to search through. Typing this filter tag will pull up a dropdown menu of the accessible text channels in the server you currently have open.
Before, During & After:
These tags allow you to search chronologically and pull up an interactive calendar to choose the starting date of the search. You can combine both Before and After filters to search within a range of dates as well. Chronological filters aren't just limited to specific dates, you can also choose days of the week (before: Monday), weeks (before: Week), or months (after: May) depending on what you're looking for.
Pinned:
Only look for pinned messages.
Step 5. Select Your Message
You will be then redirected to the specific message's location that you found. On the upper right side of the message, you will see three dots (...) labelled as "More" Click on it.
Step 6. More options
After clicking on More, you will be prompted more options for your message, you can either edit, pin (if you have the certain permissions), reply to your message, etc. Click on "Delete Message"
Step 7. Confirm Deletion
You will be asked for a confirmation to delete the message. If you select "Delete", the message will be deleted and it cannot be retrieved forever. This will also be deleted on the other user's end so they won't be able to see this in the future.
After that, your message will not be seen, even searched. The only ones that can see that you've deleted a message are the admins and moderators of the server that you deleted your message in. They will also see the message you deleted on their audit logs.
Can I delete other's messages on Discord?
You can delete other's messages too! You just have to do the same but it will only be deleted on your end. Other community members in the Discord server can still view the message. You might want to do this for contents that you don't want to see inside Discord. You can also block them so you won't see their chats in the future.
On the otherhand, if you have Administrative or Moderator permissions, you can delete a user's message for everyone. This is used for spams, suspicious links send to the server or other malicious activities by the user that may lead to a ban.
Summary
You can delete your messages on Discord without leaving a track that you've sent them. You can either use this feature if you want to delete something that you've sent in the past or a message that you've sent incorrectly. Note that this will also be deleted on the other end so noone will see them in the future. You can also delete other's message if you want to, but this is only at your end. If you have administrative or moderator permission, you can also delete other's messages for everyone.
