How to use Discord Spoiler Tags? [Step-by-Step]

Discord

If you're anything like me, you're probably extremely protective of your favorite movies and TV shows. You don't want anyone to ruin the experience for you by spoiling the plot. It's bad enough when you accidentally see a glimpse of something you weren't supposed to see, but when someone straight-up tells you what happens, it can ruin the whole thing. I get it, though. People like to talk about the things they're passionate about, and sometimes that means sharing spoilers. But for those of us who would prefer to remain spoiler-free, it can be really frustrating.

Spoiler tags are also helpful when you're talking about sensitive topics. For example, if you're discussing mental health issues, you might want to use a spoiler tag so that people who are triggered by certain topics can avoid reading that part of the conversation. If someone doesn't want to be spoiled, they can simply not read the text by not clicking on it. It's that simple!

What are Discord Spoiler Tags?

Discord Spoiler tags allow you to write text that some users may not want to see and hide until the reader chooses to see it.  If you use Discord to chat with friends about your favorite TV show, movie, or video game, you've probably come across a message with a spoiler in it. To avoid spoiling the fun for others, many people use spoiler tags to hide spoilers in their messages.

How to hide texts using Discord Spoiler Tags?

Spoiler tags are easy to use. There are three ways to send messages using the spoiler tag. You can use either two bars (||) as a markdown at the start and the finish of the word/sentence, you can use the /spoiler command or you can do the highlight method. Here are the steps to use spoiler tags on discord.

Method-1: Hide using the Two Bars (||)

Step 1. Type your word or sentence

Type in the sentence or word and you can choose where to put the spoiler tag in.

Step 2. Put the bars

Type in the bars at the start and the end of the sentence or word that you want to be hidden in the spoiler tag. In this example, I want the word "awesome" to be inside the spoiler tag so I'll be putting the bars on the start and at the end of this word. It will automatically be highlighted as shown below. This tells you that once you send this message, it will be a spoiler tag.

Step 3. Send the message

Send the message and it will appear as a black box.

Method-2: Hide using the /spoiler command

Step 1. Type /spoiler

You can use the /spoiler command on any server because this command is integrated within Discord without any bots. You can type in /spoiler and the command will automatically trigger or you can click on the command itself if you're not sure.

Step 2. Type your message

You will be prompted with a text box after typing /spoiler command. You will have to put the word that you want to be put in the spoiler tag here. Any word or sentence outside the text box will be ignored and will not be sent. In this instance, I will be sending the phrase "Spoiler tags are cool" inside a spoiler.

Step 3. Send the message

The message that you sent will appear as a black box. Anyone who clicks on the box will be able to view the content that you hidden in the spoiler tag, same with the way the two bars (||) hidden your message.

Method-3: Hide using the highlight method

Step 1. Type your word or sentence

Type in the sentence or word and you can choose where to put the spoiler tag in. For this instance, I will be sending this phrase "Hympty dumpty sat on a wall"

Step 2. Highlight the word

Highlight the word, phrase or sentence you want to add as a spoiler tag. I want the word "on a wall" to be added in the spoiler tag so I will highlight them.

Step 3. The Spoiler tag formatting

Upon highlighting the word, word formatting menu will pop up. On the last option, you will see a box that has an eye on it. This formatting menu is for spoiler tags. Click on it.

Step 5. Send the message

The message that you sent will also appear as a black box, same as the examples above.

Anyone who clicks on the box will also be able to view the content that you hidden in the spoiler tag, same with the way the two bars (||), since you also used this markdown and /spoiler command hidden your message.

The only different of these three ways is that if you only want a word or a few words to be hidden in the spoiler tag, you can't use the /spoiler command since it is only applicable to the whole sentence that you will be sending. Both the other methods uses the bar. If you're quite familiar with Discord already, you will have no problem on dealing with markdowns such as this.

Summary

Spoiler tags are a simple but incredibly useful tool that can make Discord conversations more enjoyable for everyone involved. Spoilers can ruin the experience of a game or movie for someone who hasn't seen it yet. By using spoiler tags, you can avoid spoiling the experience for someone who is trying to avoid spoilers. It's a considerate way to use Discord, and it can help prevent people from getting spoiled on a game or movie that they're looking forward to or maybe using it for some discussions that are sensitive like religion, etc. So next time you're about to drop a major spoiler, remember to use spoiler tags!
